About the client
A direct-to-consumer wellness brand selling a plant-based focus supplement as a cleaner alternative to high-caffeine energy products.
Brand awareness was solid, but organic and AI search were underused. Buyers choosing a focus supplement were researching on Google and, increasingly, asking AI assistants for a recommendation. The goal was to make both a reliable source of new customers and revenue rather than a side channel that mostly caught people who already knew the name. At the start, most target queries sat on page two of Google and the brand showed up in only a small fraction of AI recommendations.
The challenge
01
Rankings sat on page two
Average Google position was 11, so most target queries landed on the second page of results, where few buyers look. Organic search contributed little relative to how well known the brand already was.
02
A crowded, ambiguous search term
Results for a key search term were dominated by publishers, unrelated brands and competitors, which made visibility on it hard to win.
03
Barely present in AI answers
Buyers were increasingly asking ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini which focus products to buy. In December 2025 the brand appeared in only about 6% of the relevant AI answers, leaving most of those recommendations to competitors and publishers.
What we did
Move high-intent rankings from page two to page one, structure content around the questions AI engines receive, and connect both to the product pages that sell.
Win the high-intent queries
Average position 11 to 7.8
Targeted commercial and ingredient queries, the searches closest to a purchase, and worked them from the second page of results onto the first. Search clicks grew 59%, from 33.9K to 53.8K, as rankings improved.
Structure content for AI answers
Third in category AI visibility
Restructured pages to answer, directly and in a citable form, the questions AI engines receive about ingredients, benefits and comparisons. The brand now ranks third in its category for AI answer visibility, ahead of Time, Healthline and WebMD.
Publish science-led content
213 AI citations, 28 pages
Built a science-led blog on ingredients, focus and use cases, plus a direct comparison page against competing products. Those pages became the material AI engines quote: 213 AI citations across 28 pages, making the site one of the 15 most-cited domains in the category.
Connect content to the product
Content linked to product pages
Optimized meta titles, product pages and internal links so readers arriving on educational content had a clear path to the lead product. That connection is what turned new visibility, on Google and in AI answers, into orders rather than reads.
The outcome
Organic search is now a primary revenue channel for the brand, supported by a top-three position in AI answer visibility. Next is extending comparison and AI coverage to high-volume prompts and use cases where category demand is growing.
Why it worked
No single campaign did it. Higher rankings widened visibility, structured content earned AI citations, and on-page work connected both to the product, so search and AI answers fed the same revenue line. In a crowded category with ambiguous search results, applying one approach consistently across all four areas beat any one tactic.
